Daily update for Thursday, October 10, 2024

We want to begin our final Hurricane Response Daily Update with a note of thanks to staff, students and our community. Your hard work and support were keys to our success in welcoming students back to school this week.

A special thank you goes out to our incredible staff who worked tirelessly to prepare our schools and classrooms for students. Our teachers, administrators, and support staff took extra care as they planned to respond to the needs of our students and families during this difficult time.

We recognize there is more work to be done as our community recovers from this storm. But we also know that our community is strong and that we can rebuild together. Our schools are important to the recovery process as they are not just places of learning... they are the heart of our community. It is the people in our CCSD family that truly make a difference in the lives of students and in Columbia County. Today, more than ever, we thank you for your support of our students, our schools and our school district. You have proven once again what we already knew... that our school district and this community cares about its children and that this is a great place to work and learn.

As a reminder, there will be no school for students on Friday, October 11, 2024, due to a planned staff Professional Learning Day. Schools will be closed on Monday, October 14, 2024, for the Columbus Day holiday. We wish everyone a safe and happy break.

Transportation

  • As road conditions improve, please continue to monitor the Edulog Lite School Bus Tracker App for daily updates of route changes and depot stop information.
  • Those without power or internet connection may contact the CCSD Department of Transportation at 706-541-2729.
  • Beginning Tuesday, October 15, 2024, students must complete the appropriate form to ride an alternate school bus route than assigned, due to displacement from the storm. Please contact your child’s school administration or your school social worker for assistance.
  • We continue to anticipate delays during pickup and drop off as our school bus drivers slowly, and safely, navigate routes in the coming days and weeks. Thank you for your patience during this time.

We look forward to resuming our regular schedule, policies, and processes next Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

Below are the three individual notifications sent to parents on Thursday, September  26, 2024, in the order they were sent.

September 26, 2024 - 8:30 a.m.

Columbia County School District officials are monitoring the weather, working closely with local emergency management and weather officials. This morning, weather officials issued a tornado warning for our area that has been lifted as of 8:15 a.m. Out of an abundance of caution, students and staff are taking all necessary safety precautions. All students and staff in portables will be moved indoors for the day. Additionally, school buses are experiencing delays in dropping off students due to localized flooding in the area.

Safety of students and staff is a top priority and we will notify parents directly if and when a decision is made to alter the school day schedule. Parents can download the Edulog Lite Parent Portal School Bus Tracker App to track their child’s school bus.

Updates will also be available at www.ccboe.net.

September 26, 2024 - 10:30 a.m.

Out of an abundance of caution all after-school activities, including after-school care, are canceled for the day. The CCSD Career Fair has been canceled, and the Building Program Community Presentation will be rescheduled.

September 26, 2024 - 12:30 p.m.

All schools and facilities in the Columbia County School District will be closed on Friday, September 27, 2024, due to anticipated inclement weather and other possible negative impacts from Hurricane Helene.

Current forecasts indicate weather conditions will improve significantly throughout the day on Friday. Even though school athletics and activities are canceled, high school football games will remain as currently scheduled unless other notification is provided by the school.

September 27, 2024

In the wake of the devastation left by Hurricane Helene and the impact on our community, we urge our staff, students, and families to remain focused on each other and on recovering from the damage of this devastating weather event.

Just as the storm damaged homes and caused county-wide power outages, it also has affected our schools. At this time, we have been notified that power may not be restored to all of our facilities for at least a week. We will continue to receive updates and assess the situation.

The CCSD schools and facilities will be closed until at least through Wednesday, October 2, 2024. We will also share this news on our websites and via local news outlets.

In the meantime, we ask that our staff, students, parents, and community members stay off school campuses to allow our crews time to assess and address any damages.

As we all work to recover from the impact of Hurricane Helene, we believe our families must come first. The days ahead will be difficult, and we should focus on our families, our community, and our well-being. Stay safe and take care.

Sincerely,
Dr. Steven Flynt
Superintendent

September 29, 2024

First, I hope this message finds you safe and well.  I know these are difficult days, and we all look forward to a return to normalcy.  As our community continues to assess the devasting impact left by Hurricane Helene, know that our school district is also working to identify the extent of damages to our schools and facilities.

Based on recent reports and anticipated long-term power outages, we will extend the closure of schools through at least Friday, October 4, 2024.

We will continue to provide updates in the coming days, as quickly as possible, regarding the state of our schools.  This includes staff options for returning to work in a safe manner, as well as updates on plans for makeup athletic events and other student activities.  Information will be shared on our websites and with local news media.

Meanwhile, please continue to remain safe during clean-up efforts.  This type of traumatic event is hard on us all, especially our children.  With that in mind, keep focusing on your families, loved ones, and those who may be in need.

Sincerely,
Dr. Steven Flynt
Superintendent

October 4, 2024

Good afternoon. Let me start by saying how proud I am to be a part of this community. To say that this past week has been hard is an understatement. Yet, as I have traveled around the county assessing the damage from the storm, I have been struck by the strength, resilience, and caring found throughout Columbia County. Our community has pulled together, steadfast in its commitment and efforts to restore basic utilities, clear homes and roadways of debris, and take care of each other.

Much progress has been made and I know we all yearn for a return to normalcy. However, we understand that many in our community are still working to address their families’ basic needs. That said, we know that our schools are the hubs and hearts of our community, and that bringing our students and staff back into our buildings will play an important role in that return to normalcy that we all seek.

As this is a situation our school district and community have never faced before, we have leaned into our partnerships with local officials to help assess our readiness and guide our decisions regarding the safe return to our buildings. With that in mind, we will hold an employee workday on Tuesday, October 8, and are asking all employees to report to work if it is safe for them to do so. We also are planning a two-day school week for students next week, with them attending school on Wednesday, October 9, and Thursday, October 10. Students will not attend school on Friday, October 11, as it is a scheduled Fall Break for students and District Professional Learning Day. Students and all staff will be off on Monday, October 14, for the Columbus Day Holiday. We will reach out directly to specific communities, and share updates with our local news media, should any schools experience prolonged power outages that would affect these plans.

In the Columbia County School District, we care about our students, our employees, and this community and are committed to doing our very best during this difficult time. We know there will be challenges next week as we return to school, but we will be ready as we have the best team around… a team that is dedicated in its commitment to our students. As part of that commitment, we look forward to working with our families and community to do what is best, and what is needed, for our children. Please continue to stay safe and remain diligent in ensuring the safety and well-being of your families, loved ones, and those who may be in need.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven Flynt
Superintendent

Daily update for Sunday, October 6, 2024

As a reminder, our schedule for next week includes limited staff to return Monday, October 7, 2024, to prepare our buildings to welcome back all employees on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. Students who are able will report on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, and Thursday, October 10, 2024. There will be no school for students on Friday, October 11, 2024, however, staff will report for a Professional Development Day. Schools will be closed on Monday, October 14, 2024, for the Columbus Day holiday. Below is other important information for students and staff.

Staff Attendance

  • We recognize that some employees are continuing to face challenging circumstances. Please notify your immediate supervisor to address your individual situation regarding a safe return to work.

Student Attendance

  • Parents can rest assured that those students whose families are facing ongoing hardships such as displacement or continued outages with utilities next week, will not be counted absent.

  • Drivers will begin testing their routes on Monday, October 7, 2024, and Tuesday, October 8, 2024.
  • Temporary shuttle bus stops may be required for some students, instead of stopping at each individual driveway. Parents will be notified directly regarding any changes to bus stops or route changes impacting their schools.

Nutrition Services

Our Facilities Maintenance and Operations team, along with school nutrition staff, monitored the freezer/cooler and generator operation throughout the power outage, and nutrition managers at each school double-checked their inventory this past week.

Facilities Update

We have been working in and around our facilities since last Friday. Our local utility companies have been very responsive as you have seen across our entire region. At this time, Blue Ridge Elementary School and Brookwood Elementary School are the only two awaiting power restoration. They are estimated to be up and running in the next two days. If power is not restored, we will notify parents directly with enough lead time to prepare to keep students home.

Residual debris cleanup efforts and repairs on our school campuses are still ongoing, however, our schools are able to safely accommodate students and staff.

Be on the lookout for daily updates regarding operations and efforts to ensure a safe return.
